How do I measure my impact?

More and more often, entrepreneurs feel the need to measure the impact of their business operations. This may be to determine the most effective sustainability strategy, demonstrate that they offer a sustainable alternative, or comply with new laws and regulations. But what is the best way to measure impact? On this page, we provide you with information to help you get started with measuring and steering impact.

Choose an Appropriate Method

There isn’t a single methodology that is always the best. The suitability of a method will depend on factors such as the goal and scope. The Sustainability Method Selection Tool from the RIVM helps you choose the method that best addresses your sustainability question within three steps.

A commonly used method to assess the impact of a product is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). A Life Cycle Assessment is a method to measure the impact of a product throughout its life cycle, from extracting raw materials to waste processing. With the Self Assessment Tool, you can use this method to visualize the impact of your products. If you seek more insight into your impact, it is advisable to engage a consultant in the field of LCA.

How circular am I?

In addition to tools for assessing environmental impact, there are also methods specifically focused on circularity. Versnellingshuis Nederland Circulair! has published an overview of 17 tools to measure the circularity of products and organizations.
