Natural Capital

…with regard to technology?

Barriers concerning technology can obstruct the mainstreaming of natural capital. The main problem is the fact that technology is always considered from a ‘solution’-perspective.

Technology as a solution

In many cases in the Netherlands, there is a conscious decision for a technological problem solution instead of a natural solution. This can be considered a barrier with regards to technology, as technology is always considered from a ‘solution’-perspective. Think for example of pesticides instead of natural crop protection through stimulating a diverse ecosystem. The technological alternatives are often expedient and controllable, but do not account for the complexity of the ecosystem.
